How to freshen up for summer.
First, determine what’s causing the odor. Research shows that bad breath originates from the surface on the back of your tongue or plaque on your teeth. Often, it’s caused by leftover food particles, which collect bacteria if not removed.
Eventually this forms plaque, which can lead to an infection of your gums, another cause of bad breath. A dry mouth caused by medications could also be the culprit, since it means less saliva is available to wash away debris to fight odors.
• Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily to remove food debris and plaque, especially at the gumline, is essential.
• An anti-bacterial rinse, especially before going to bed, can be helpful.
• Try gently brushing your tongue, either with your brush or with a special tongue scraper, or chewing gum (choose sugarless) to help your mouth produce saliva.
• Drinking plenty of water will also help your body make saliva.
• And be sure to schedule regular cleanings and checkups, since this will enable your dentist to detect and treat periodontal disease or other oral care issues early.
